The pursuit of the perfect moment is something people spend their entire lives looking for. Let me share my perfect moment with you.
In 2011 I was tasked with creating a cocktail for the Bacardi Legacy Competition. I wanted to create a cocktail out of classic ingredients which could last the tests of time.
By using Lillet Blanc, Byrrh, Campari, orange bitters and marmalade with the beautifully floral, light and creamy Bacardi Superior Rum, I was able to create a cocktail that could have been dreamed up by one of the classic London Cantineros, such as Ada Coleman or Harry Craddock.
Ending up with a cocktail that evoked both class and legend was my main goal, no mean feat. I went with a cocktail that was bitter and refreshing, perfect for hot climates and the summer. With an old fashioned style, it begs to be sipped, savoured and re-visited, just what the doctor ordered after a hard day at work.
Stirring this drink over ice insured that the flavours stayed strong and true and allowed me to handle them with the due care and attention they needed.
Having tasted a daiquiri made with a bottle of 1930's Bacardi in 2011, I was astounded at how good it was. It's similarity to a modern day daiquiri also intrigued me.
Could I create a timeless cocktail that tastes as good now as it will in 80 - 100 years time?
That would be my legacy.
By using well established ingredients, such as Bacardi Superior, created in 1862 by Don Facundo Masso at his distillery on Matadero street and Campari, established in 1860, I feel I have done this.
The finished cocktail has been carefully crafted to maximise the impact on the palate. Every stage has been examined to make sure it fits the drink and aids in the journey of flavour, from the creaminess of the Bacardi to the long finish of Campari and orange bitters, carried by the sweet, tart marmalade.
Even the glassware has been picked accordingly. The weight of the old fashioned glass and the way it feels in the hand instantly add sophistication and glamour, making you feel great and helping you to drift away into YOUR perfect moment.
